The short version #
These are different kinds of product that happen to overlap on one job.
Otter is built for meetings: it joins your calls, takes live notes, and shares them with your team. Offline Transcription is built for files you already have: you drop in a recording and get a transcript back, without it leaving your machine.
If you need a bot in your Zoom calls, Otter does something this app does not. If you have recordings on disk and you would rather they stayed there, keep reading.
Why people move off Otter #
The recording goes to someone else's servers. For a lot of work that is simply not allowed. If you are a journalist protecting a source, a lawyer handling privileged material, a clinician with patient audio, or a researcher with consent conditions attached to your interviews, "we upload it and store it securely" is a different answer from "it never leaves the device." Offline Transcription makes no network request while transcribing, so there is no retention policy to read and no breach that can reach your files.
The minute allowance. Otter Pro includes 1,200 minutes a month — twenty hours. That sounds generous until you transcribe a conference, a set of long interviews, or a back catalogue of podcast episodes, and then it is gone in a week. Offline Transcription has no allowance at all. The work happens on your own processor, so there is nothing for anyone to meter.
The bill never stops. Otter is $16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month if you commit to a year. Offline Transcription Pro is $12.99 once — less than one month of Otter, and it does not renew.
Where Otter is genuinely better #
Worth being straight about this.
Otter joins live meetings and takes notes while people talk. Offline Transcription does not — it works on files you already recorded. Otter has shared workspaces, comments and team billing; this app has none of that, because it has no server to host them on. And Otter runs in a browser and on Android, so it fits a mixed-device team in a way a Mac and iPhone app does not.
If those are the things you are paying for, Otter is the right tool and you should keep it.
Where this app is better #
If what you actually need is "turn these recordings into text, accurately, without sending them anywhere", then you are paying Otter for a lot of infrastructure you never touch.
Offline Transcription drops that entirely. Drag in a folder of recordings, click transcribe once, and export to TXT, VTT, SRT or CSV. It handles 99 languages, and it works on a plane with the Wi-Fi off.
